Umino Iruka was a misfit orphan who spent his time in high school drawing on his assignments during class and causing trouble. When his art teacher noticed that he actually had some talent, she entered an application for him in Konoha's scholarship program, which he (unexpectedly) won. He left Konoha for the city of Sunagakure at 18 with nothing but his art supplies and a duffel bag...

After earning a degree in fine arts he decided that teaching was where his heart lay and took out enough loans to get a 2-year degree in education.

Iruka finally graduated and tried, unsuccessfully, to find a job teaching at a school in Suna for months. When the bills started piling up, he had no choice but to return home and take up his old high school job again to make ends meet. He worked nights as a waiter, back in the small but well-frequented restaurant called Ichiraku's. During the day he searched for a job where he could put his love for art, teaching, and impressionable young minds to good use.

He had been back home for two months when he saw a promising ad in the classifieds of the Konoha Times. It read: "Wanted: Art Teacher for NINJA High. Great pay, benefits, and all the students you can handle." He didn't know about the last part... but the great pay and benefits sounded good! Iruka called the number, interviewed, was hired and the rest is history....

Iruka is a good soul with a kind disposition, but he does have a temper and can fall back into his misfit ways with enough 'persuasion' (usually in the form of sake)... People wonder sometimes if there isn't something a little more devious hidden behind that cheerful and caring exterior. Is he really as innocent as he seems or is it all an act? We'll see!
